What is The 50 Million Missing Campaign?

The 50 Million Missing (50MM)  is a campaign against female genocide in India. In less than a century more than 50 million females have been eliminated from India’s population.  For an overview of the campaign click here. For more media articles and interviews on the campaign click here.

How have 50 million plus females (girls and women) been eliminated from India?

This is due female feticide, infanticide, dowry murders, high under-5 mortality rate due to starvation and neglect, and a high maternal mortality rate due to neglect and repeated abortions. Why is this a genocide?

For three reasons.  1) Because of its unprecedented scale.  2) Because it targets a specific group — namely females.  3) It meets the definition of genocide under the 1948 U.N. Charter on the prevention of genocide.  For more information click here.

What are the consequences of this genocide?

1. The natural gender ratio is usually about 100 males: 105 females for human populations.  By the consistent elimination of females from the population India has warped its gender ratio so horrendously that as of now there are about 62 million more males than females.  This warping is IRREVERSIBLE.

2. Millions of men now and in the foreseeable future in India will not have access to female partners.  This has resulted in an increase in sex related trafficking of girls and women, the kidnapping, buying and selling of “brides”, and increased rates of sex crimes.  These crimes will increase exponentially and will effect all strata of society.

3. India contains 1/5 of the total human population.  When India warps its gender ratio so  its impact is of consequence to the world at large.

What are the objectives of the 50 MM campaign?

1. To spread public awareness about the scale of this disaster.  Our pilot survey indicates that the public is either unaware of the scale of this problem, and/or in denial of it.  To see the survey click here.

2. To spearhead government action on laws pertaining to female feticide, infanticide, dowry, and dowry murders.  And to have the government commit to a time-line within which the gender ratio decline will be controlled.  For more click here.

3. To initiate gender related workshops in schools, colleges, offices, and rural and urban communities, to revolutionize the public perception of gender and gender based roles.
